Figen Ayan, a renowned expert in sustainable maritime tourism, has stepped down from her role as Director of Galataport Istanbul to embark on a new professional chapter by founding her own consulting firm, Ayan Consulting. After more than a decade at the helm of Galataport, Ayan leaves behind a legacy of significant innovations and achievements in the port and tourism sectors.
Ayan officially introduced her new consulting firm at the International Cruise Summit 2024, now fully operational as of this November, aiming to present it to the entire industry.
During her 11 years leading Galataport, Ayan spearheaded the creation of a one-of-a-kind cruise terminal valued at $1.7 billion, overseeing the project from its inception to its operation. This facility includes the world’s first underground cruise terminal, equipped with an innovative hatch system to create temporary customs and security zones when ships are docked, revolutionizing port efficiency. Under her leadership, Istanbul became a key cruise destination in the Mediterranean, serving both as a port of call and a homeport, attracting more than 40 cruise companies.
As a former President and now Honorary President of MedCruise, Ayan has built a strong international network in the cruise industry over her three decades of experience. She is also recognized by the European Commission as an expert in sustainable maritime and cruise tourism, a role that enables her to advise on projects that balance economic development, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. This approach, which she describes as «holistic sustainability,» will be central to the services offered by her new consulting firm, Ayan Consulting.
